Frequently Asked Questions

Weatherization & Energy Efficiency

I'm having an emergency with one of my appliances. What do I do?

Please note that while we strive to provide timely support, our service is not equipped for or intended to address emergency situations. We apologize for any inconvenience. Our team makes every effort to address situations requiring urgent responses as needed after a home assessment has taken place, but eligible applicants are initially selected for service from an ongoing waitlist before a project is initiated.

How do I know if I qualify for weatherization and energy efficiency services?

Our weatherization and energy efficiency services are provided to homeowners and renters that meet the qualifications and criteria set by the Ohio Home Weatherization Assistance Program. Households must have an income at or below 200% of the federal poverty guideline to receive weatherization services. If you have received weatherization services within the last 15 years, know that we may be able to visit your home to make repairs, but priority is given to applicants that have not yet received weatherization services. Visit our Weatherization & Energy Efficiency page to learn more.

I submitted my weatherization pre-application. When will I hear back?

Our Weatherization & Energy Efficiency department processes a large volume of applications. Due to high client demand, applicants are placed on a waitlist before their initial home inspection. A team member will reach out within three business days of your pre-application submission. Please keep an eye out on your email and phone notifications for our updates.

I have been approved for weatherization and energy efficiency services. What happens now?

If you have received a formal approval, a member of our team will reach out to schedule a home inspection/energy audit. Please note that home visits are scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis based on our current demand. Home visits may be scheduled any time between 2 weeks to 6 months following your application approval.

If I rent my home, can I still apply for weatherization?

Qualified individuals that rent their home can receive weatherization and energy efficiency services if their landlord is in agreeance.

What appliances can you repair?

Our weatherization team can repair or replace a number of appliances that use an excessive amount of electricity in order to lower eligible applicants' energy burdens, like furnaces, hot water heaters, refrigerators, and deep freezers. These efforts take place after our team has identified a need for repairs and replacements in their initial energy audit. If our team finds that your home does not need repairs or replacements to your appliances, they will address other areas in your home that require service.

Can you help me fill out my application?

Our customer service team is happy to help. Call us at 419-691-2900 or email us: customerservice@nwtoledo.org. Feel free to visit our Contact Us page to fill out a contact form, and we will get back to you as quickly as possible. Finally, our customer service team will gladly assist you in filling out your application in person at our main site on 704 2nd Street, Toledo OH, 43605.

Can you repair my siding and roofing?

Unless your siding and roofing are impacting your home energy burden or impeding on other weatherization efforts due to health and safety hazards, we will not facilitate repairs to those areas of your home. However, if our crew technicians find that damages to your siding or roofing cause a significant increase in your energy usage or are restricting unrelated weatherization services because of safety concerns, we will determine the next steps to remedy them. These repairs are made on a case-by-case basis, and are not guaranteed to occur in every home.

I'm having electrical/plumbing issues. Can NeighborWorks® Toledo Region help?

Work performed during a weatherization service may include minor plumbing or electrical repairs. Weatherization services can vary between properties. All work is catered to a home's specific needs that are identified during the home's inspection. Depending on the home's condition, an inspection might reveal that the home requires minor electrical repairs, replacements of lightbulbs or power strips, or minor plumbing repairs. Contact us to ask specific questions about your home.

Do I have to pay for financial coaching?

Financial coaching is available at no cost. Our Financial Coaches can work with clients on goals including budget planning, savings planning, credit counseling, debt management planning, access to credit building tools, access to banking products, and more. What topics can my financial coach cover?

Affordable Housing Development

Are there renovated homes available for purchase right now?

Check our current listings to see move-in ready properties for sale. Note that we might not always have a listing available, but we are always working on restoring properties to put on the market at an affordable price.

What repairs are made when a property is renovated?

Our construction crew works with local contractors to make updates needed to restore homes to their best condition. This can include the construction of new porches, gutter repair, window replacement, appliance replacement, installation of new flooring, and a fresh coat of paint to make the home shine. All redevelopment work is done to ensure homes are safe, affordable, comfortable, and investments to be proud of.

Training & Workforce Development

Who is qualified to receive training?

Some training courses require trainees to have taken prerequisite courses. However, basic training such as OSHA 10 and Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) do not require trainees to have completed training courses prior to their facilitation. Reach out with questions about specific training courses.

Can I receive financial coaching at the THHTC even if I do not participate in workforce development training?

Yes! Our financial coaches can help you achieve your goals regardless of whether or not you are receiving workforce development training. Reach out to our Financial Opportunity Center® staff to get in contact with a financial coach.
